[mysqld]

And somewhere below that set

max_connections=500

Or whatever numeric value you need.

How to fix Message: SQLSTATE[08004] [1040] Too many connections, Because your Model class instantiates a new Database object in its constructor, each time you instantiate a Model (or any class extending it),  I've put a higher max-connection value and was able to reconnect my Plesk admin. The problem was caused by too much disk space used in my case and running : apt-get clean allowed me to free a little disk space and regain access to the Plesk Admin.

The root cause for this error for me was a full hard drive. Keep that in mind as a possibility.

Plesk and/or websites are inaccessible: SQLSTATE[08004] [1040 , SQLSTATE[08004] [1040] Too many connections. Websites fail to load with the error: Error Establishing a Database Connection. The answer is, MySQL by default will consider maximum allowed connection as max_connection + 1 for SUPER user to fix this issue.

In your mysql my must to run this:

Set Global max_connections=2000

I keep getting this error on my site and I do not know  Hello @ken315,. You need to set a bigger value in the max_connections (deafult 100) setting in the /etc/my.cnf file.. • For those had trouble finding my.conf file: stackoverflow.com/a/27325487/515585
  • Small typo: the correct syntax is max_connections=500, not max-connections=500 as originally stated in this answer.
  • The string "set-variable=" is no longer needed since MySQL 5.x, so the other answer provided by Camden S. is correct.
  • But why does this happen? Is it because the connections aren't closed like asked in the question?
  • My root cause was also a full hard drive.
  • That works, but lasts only until you restart your MySQL server. So, a good way to bridge that time if you don't want to restart it immediately, but you also have edit my.cnf as shown in the other answers to make this change permanent.
