change default file format when saving pictures by MS Paint

Each time when I try to saving a picture by MS Paint, the default format is .png, but I want .jpeg, How can I set .jpeg as default format when saving pictures from MS Paint? I save pictures quite often, I don't want to change the format every time.

Take a look at this Windows Forum Post. What it does is create a quick access link that will default the Save File dialog to jpeg, you would then click this icon to save your file as jpeg.

From Link:

Open PAINT, then click the BLUE drop down box in the top left hand corner of the screen (this is the box that gives the drop down options for saving a file), now click SAVE AS and a selection of save as formats including JPEG will appear to the right, move your cursor over the JPEG option and RIGHT CLICK (not left click), three options will be presented, click (select) the top option which says ADD TO QUICK ACCESS FOLDER. This creates a new ICON at the top of the paint screen next to the DO and UNDO arrows (icons).

As the author zdd asked for a keyboard shortcut to save the file as jpeg, you can now use keyboard shortcut ALT + 4 (if the icon is at the 4th place).

How to change Microsoft Paint's default save type, Create a blank jpeg image and save it to a location on your system. Right-click the image, select properties and set it to read-only. Tap on the Windows-key to open the start menu or start screen, and type Paint to display the Microsoft Paint result. Right-click on Paint and select Properties from the options. Here, I am telling you the workaround to set.JPG image format as default save type. Step #1: Open blank screen on paint. Save it at your default image folder with the name “default.jpg”. (Set save type to.JPG while saving the image.

there should be a better version too:

  1. Create a blank jpg image and save it into a permanent folder somewhere

  2. Right-click the image, select Properties and set it to Read-only

  3. Search for Paint in the main Windows menu (not mspaint!!!)

  4. Right-click on the Paint shortcut and select Properties

  5. in the Target field, replace it with this line:

    %windir%\system32\mspaint.exe "C:\Users\username\Documents\default1.jpg"

  6. every time you want to save something as .jpg, search for Paint(not mspaint!!) in the main menu and you are good to go!

  7. in addition, you can also add the JPG shortcut into the Paint quick access toolbar as described by others

How to set default file format for MS Paint, I'm afraid this is not possible, based on this answer to a related question. It would be good if someone can confirm this. Make sure you replace the path with the path to the blank jpg image that you have created. Paint from this moment on will always load the default image on start. You can now use the Ctrl-S shortcut to save a new file as jpg - or any other file format that you have selected instead. The file needs to be read only so that you do not overwrite it.

Can you change the DEFAULT Save As type in MS Paint to JPG , Greetings, I am using XP and I use MS Paint for screen shot pastes. I then have to promptly save those files. Now, I know its not much but ev ery Paint has never had the option to change the default file format for saving. You still had to open the file in paint and then save it under new format with out touching the image.

Save As, Step 1: Select File → Save As → (Choose the Image Format). Here, we have chosen JPEG file type. save as mspaint. Step 2: In "Save As" dialogue box, select “PDN is the default format used when saving a multilayered image. Paint.net uses this format to save the layer structure. If you flatten the layers prior to saving, the format will default to PNG.” As expressed, this is not quite correct. It will not default to PNG but to whatever you started with.

MS Paint - jpeg as default save file type, I cant find a way to change the default save file type in Paint. selection of file type. so I dont have to change it all the time when saving a picture. Paint has never had the option to change the default file format for saving. Change the Default Program Association for a File Type Windows 10 also enables you to change the default program for opening a specific file type. For example, if you'd like to automatically open PNG files in Paint, you simply need to change the default program association for the selected file type (.png). Open your Pictures library, right-click on any PNG file and select Open With > Choose another app:

  • I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because this has nothing to do with programming
  • thanks, although this does not work with Ctrl + S, it saves me lots of time.
  • LOL! i found out that it actually works 100% !! you just need to type in "paint" into the search/run box, not "mspaint" !! (and you cant make the same shortcut to mspaint.exe)
