href doesn't appear as a clickable link

a href doesn't open link
a href not working inside li tag
anchor link html
why won t my html link work
href id
href link doesn't work
href new window
a href style html

I am trying to make an unordered list with clickable links, but none of them appears like that.

<!doctype html>
<html>

<head>
    <title>My Page</title>
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="../css/main.css">
</head>
<body>

     <header>
        <nav>
            <h1>My Page</h1>
            <ul>
                <li><a href="#"></a>sampletest1</li>
                <li><a href="#"></a>sampletest2</li>
                <li><a href="#"></a>sampletest3</li>
                <li><a href="#"></a>sampletest4</li>
                <li><a href="#"></a>sampletest5</li>
            </ul>
        </nav>
    </header>
</body>
</html>

I was expecting a list of clickable links, but I get a list containing the set items but without their clickable links.

I am new to web developing so I am assuming I have overlooked something.

edit: I am using a plugin named Emmet whivh I used to make the block/section.

The problem is that you are closing the anchor tag before the content.

            <li><a href="#"></a>sampletest1</li>
            <li><a href="#"></a>sampletest2</li>
            <li><a href="#"></a>sampletest3</li>

It gives nothing because there is no label for the anchor tag.

You should change like

            <li><a href="#">sampletest1</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">sampletest2</a></li>
            <li><a href="#">sampletest3</a></li>

My clickable link doesn't work, My clickable link doesn't work. <a href="http://www.codecademy.com/"><img src="http://www.giraffes.org/giraffe-12.jpg" /></a> this is what I put but the link does  The return false on the end of my above example prevents the href actually being used if the JavaScript runs but the href is still what will be used if for any reason the JavaScript doesn't run. The href therefore needs to contain an actual valid value based on where you want the link to take people who do not have JavaScript available.

you should write words into link content like:

<a href="#">sampletest1</a>

[SOLVED] Href not working? - HTML & CSS, Hi everyone, I wanted to add a little feature to my webpage, where I have the banners, so that just by click redirect to another webpage, but it´s  A blank href property is actually a hyperlink to the current page. In other words, it will cause a page refresh. As I discussed, href="#" is also a hyperlink, and causes scrolling. Therefore, the best solution for hyperlink placeholders is actually href="#!"

This is because you must write your text inside the a-tag, like this:

<li><a href="#">sampletest1</a></li>
<li><a href="#">sampletest2</a></li>
<li><a href="#">sampletest3</a></li>
<li><a href="#">sampletest4</a></li>
<li><a href="#">sampletest5</a></li>

Nested Links, this is invalid and won't render as expected --> <a href="#one"> that doesn't quite handle a situation where one link is nested inside another. A good idea would be to use link.getAttribute('href') instead of link.href for the URL. See the solution for details. See the solution for details. Open the solution in a sandbox.
