For some reason, my voice recorder app won't use AirPods as an input source. Upon beginning a recording, the input source changes from the AirPods to the iPhone microphone. Not sure how to fix it.

There are two ways to record and play audio while AirPods are connected. For both cases we will use AVAudioSessionCategoryPlayAndRecord category. The trick is to manage AVAudioSessions option set.

  1. Add .allowBluetoothA2DP option. This will allow you to listen audio via AirPods and record with internal mic.
  2. Add .allowBluetooth option. With this option you can record audio with AirPods during playback. But in this case audio quality will be reduced.

PSA: Apple AirPods can't be used to record audio with the iPhone , You can't use Apple AirPods to record audio when shooting video with the pick up audio when recording video with Apple's own native iPhone camera app. Upon discovering the incompatibility problem, those same Apple Instead, the camera app reverts to the mic on the iPhone for the audio source. Instead, setting the category to AVAudioSessionCategoryPlayAndRecord allows recording to work with the AirPods. I then still maintain a Playback only category for the session throughout the app for audio playback. Only switching to PlayAndRecord when about to record audio. As a side note: Apple does not list the AirPods as an MFi device.

Change the sound input settings on Mac, If you're recording sound through your computer's sound port, you can adjust the input volume to compensate for the sound source being too loud or quiet. I've even set them as the default input source in sound preferences but the internal microphone is always used. I also attempted to record a voice over on iMovie on my iPad Pro, and again, it only uses the internal microphone. I can hear audio in the AirPods but it doesn't use the microphone in the AirPods to record the voice over.
