In the manifest file I added permissions coarse and fine, and when I run on device with Android 6, nothing happens! I try everything but no way to get location updates...

What am I doing wrong?

You need to actually request the Location permission at runtime (notice the comments in your code stating this).

Google has created a library for easy Permissions management. Its called EasyPermissions

Here is a simple example on requesting Location permission using this library.

@AfterPermissionsGranted(REQUEST_CODE) is used to indicate the method that needs to be executed after a permission request with the request code REQUEST_CODE has been granted.

This above case, the method requestLocationPermission() method is called if the user grants the permission to access location services. So, that method acts as both a callback and a method to request the permissions.

You can implement separate callbacks for permission granted and permission denied as well. It is explained in the github page.

How to request Location Permission at runtime, You need to actually request the Location permission at runtime (notice the comments in your code stating this). Here is tested and working code to request the  Handle Permission Request. After the user has granted or denied the permission request, it’s time to handle the response and turn on or off the functionality. This can be accomplished by overriding the OnRequestPermissionsResult in the Activity where the permission was requested.

I like short code. I use RxPermission for permissions.

First add these permissions (or one you need) in your manifest.xml.

Requesting location permissions on Android, On Cordova and Xamarin, the SDK prompts users for permissions by default. However, on native Android, users need to request the permissions. My app needed Storage and Location permissions. So, add these permissions in the Android Manifest file like this: Now, as soon the app starts, it asks for both (Location and Storage) permissions. If both permissions are granted, then the app proceeds normally with the usual functionality.

This code work for me. I also handled case "Never Ask Me"

  • nice example. Thanks!. Watch out for the gotcha.. Make sure you're using android.Manifest. Android Studio seems to default to my.app.package.Manifest instead.
  • @hexicle You're right. I just ran this code as it was, and it definitely wasn't working properly. The easiest fix is just to call checkLocationPermission() in onCreate() instead, so I modified the answer to do that. With this solution, you can use onResume() and onPause() exactly as it is in the question. Thank you for calling this to my attention, cheers!
  • Hi, thanks for your answer, but I have a problem : When I create a new RxPermissions, I have an error : "PositionActivity cannot be converted to FragmentActivity". I wrote this line on the onCreate of my PositionActivity (who is not a FragmentActivity)
  • Because you have problem with PositionActivity extend part. Perhaps your PositionActivity is not extending Activity or AppCompactActivity. It is not RxPermission issue.
  • RxPermissions is about 3 billion time easier than other libs.
